तपाईं धन्यवाद Prabal | Prabal Gurung SS2016

Under amber lights, 28 monks emerge, and with clasped hands, begin chanting a prayer of gratitude; Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2016 opens. Suddenly I was emotional, not because I understood the prayer, but because I felt it, you could feel it, elevating the anticipation of what was to come…

Airy whites and soft saffron silhouettes in luxurious textiles float down the runway like Nepalese angels. An evolution begins, from fille to femme, timid to tigress, without losing a hint of grace; expressed in color, celebrating the strength of the shoulder in paint-stroked shades of cadmium, carmine, daffodil, dandelion, and embroidered textures brought to life in orange, copper and gold metallic. Beaded carbon elements add depth to the delicate…

Watching, was like witnessing a metamorphosis; the evolution of a being, be it human, soulful, or geographic, conveyed through fashion.  The show closes with the strength and boldness of vermillion, symbolizing perseverance through darkness, re-birthed with boldness.

It was only after the show I learned of the designer’s inspiration: a nod of love to his native Nepal, her perseverance through pain and tragedy, and most of all, gratitude to the world that uplifted her.

The 11th | New York City

Much like any relationship that takes effort to grow and thrive, I spent the summer rekindling my connection with the figurative ‘man’ in my life: New York City. I wanted to see him, simply, with new eyes. I discovered neighborhoods and hidden parks and gardens meticulously landscaped around silently aggressive sculpture. His boldness is intriguingly handsome. The personality of New York City’s skyline asserts itself through weeping willows giving architectural balance to stoic beauty. There are so many share-worthy moments however the history of this day required its own recognition.

For more than a decade, the 11th of September permeates the minds of us all, with memories recounting where we were when… Left is the resilience of a city cloaked in pride and reverence.  Standing at Gotham’s highest point, a memorial beams, and love is ingrained in the literal and figurative, honoring the sacrifice of so many, and those sacrificed, filling up the heart of an entire city.

Never Forget~

Serena | My Fall Fashion Muse

An in-flight movie purchase starring my ‘dream’ client Jennifer Lawrence; the soothing and supportive words of strength offered by a close friend, and the quest of a tennis icon and her historical season, are the musings behind my Fall fashion motif.  A perfect storm of inspiration ignited by one name…Serena

The moniker Serena denotes strength, beauty, balance, the nurturing fortitude of a woman, all while maintaining a marriage between femininity and masculinity of spirit.

Jennifer Lawrence’s character in the film Serena was bold and brash, but captivating; unapologetic and malicious, while still maintaining an air of vulnerability.  Serena Hedison, a close friend and confidant, is what I like to call BeautyCool. She is quick-witted and astute, self-aware, open, and present. She also happens to be, gorgeous with effortless glamourous hair!  And then, there is Serena Williams, the epitome of dominance and strength, tenacity and confidence, the embodiment of allure…and that specimen of a body!  Her competition is her own being.

In the film, costume designer Signe Sejlund styled the character Serena in varying textures and shades of olive green, layered and complimented with hints of the softest blush, to an intense fuchsia. The wardrobe was strong and soft, bold and subdued, x and y… personified by a name, SERENA.

Hotel California, NYC

Through the thickness of a European accent, he professed, ‘I could listen to your voice all night…’ He then asked, if I would sing him a song.  I warned him of the potential tragedy likely to ensue.  Yet tickled, and a little flattered, I reluctantly obliged his request. ‘ So, what song should we sing?’ I asked.  He looked at me, and replied, “Hotel California…”

One iTunes download later, and a quick Google search for lyrics, we stumbled through the melody of a classic…and lived one of those awesomely random, unforgettable New York moments…

The memory of that night was reignited by the name of an über rich, super pigmented , high-shine gloss with the perfect punch of opaque.  Its sheer enough to complement a smoky eye, and strong enough to stand alone.  How fortuitous this Becca Ultimate Colour Gloss is aptly named Hotel California…Ahhhh, life is but a theme.

…All That Jazz… | Broadway Beauty Muse(ical)

With one my closest friends, Voscia Walker visiting New York City for the very first time, it was my obligation to take her out and paint the town!  And what sings Empire City more than an iconic Broadway musical???  Her selection, Chicago; I happily obliged!  Luckily, were able to grab tickets at the 11th hour, literally, and of course, I sensed a theme brewing.  Having seen, and loved the movie, I was excited to emulate the vibe; coy and sexy, in song? Yes please!!!

From curtain, the show is incredible!  Engaging and flirtatious, with fictitious, murderous characters one cannot help root for.  The entire production is spectacular!  The costume design, hair and makeup, the orchestra, and the story give perfect inspiration for theme.  Tuxedo jacket. Check. Veil, yes, veil. Check.  Smudgy, smokey, eye-lip combo. Check.  Secret dance moves.  Triple check.  You know, just in case.

Bunny Hugs…

fleur•tation | A Summer Style Inspiration

The first days of Summer ignite memories of a biting New York City night in February, when MoMa stayed open until dawn, and the cool-kid locals, diverse in both age and ethnicity, emerged to get a glimpse into the mind of Henri Matisse

Prior to attending the exhibit, I Netflix’d Barbara Freed’s ‘A Model for Matisse’…a documentary recounting their relationship (described by Matisse as a ‘fleur-tation’ ) between the artist and Sister Jacques-Marie, the nurse who would become his muse; the chapel she would inspire, and he would later create…with traces of his gouaches découpés, or ‘cut-outs,‘ of stained paper, synchronously and subtly expressed in the stained glass windows of the Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence.

The documentary pulled me closer to the art, to the artist; and his brain, seemingly made of vibrant color, and adventure…The Cut-Outs, with intentional fluidity of shape, directly inspired my Summer theme…to live vibrantly, in flowy, flirty, unstructured pieces of bold color, celebrating femininity…

…Summer beauty of cheekbones ‘cutout’ with bronzer, slow-grinding against the boldness of NARS-blushed cheeks that smile to the beat of Mark Ronson’s ‘Summer Breaking’…bold liquid liner for Friday night eyes, on a Tuesday…and lips stained to last, and you know, last…;)

‘A fleur-tation…What takes place between us is like a shower of flowers- rose petals that we throw at each other.’ ~Henri Matisse

TBT: Self-Dove

As a makeup artist, I have learned to appreciate that every woman, and man, has at minimum, one unmistakably beautiful feature.
The newest Dove ad campaign brilliantly explores how we perceive ourselves, and our own individual beauty; citing only 4% of women globally describes themselves as beautiful.  Dove commissioned a forensic sketch artist to draw a group of women based on their self-description of their own features.  Seeing it made me think of a word I learned recently, maître, meaning, loving-kindness towards oneself.

This campaign ignited within me a desire to explore and evaluate how I view my own appearance.  Would I describe myself with maître?  Or, Would I be as self-deprecating as the women in the video? How would my self- explained sketch differ, juxtaposed with a stranger’s perception of me?  As these questions danced in my brain, I realized, once I was completely honest with myself, that, I, many times, like the subjects in the commercial, have or have had the tendency to pick myself apart, in similar ways.

I found this campaign powerful, necessary, timeless., and, at the same time, refreshingly honest and vulnerable.   If you have a moment, and you have not seen it, take a peek, I’d love to know what you think.  I thought it was important to share…
