Madame Sophia | My Italian Beauty Muse

For years, before ever visiting, I imagined Italy and the beauty of its landscape, as Sophia Loren personified. The Sophia of the 1950’s. The Legend of the Lost Sophia- demure and mesmerizing. A perfect dichotomy between coyly aloof, and intensely passionate. Equal parts signora, and sex bomb, simultaneously.

Sophia Loren’s beauty and style is the embodiment of femininity… soft curls, turbans, head wraps, and scarves; chandelier earrings, and jeweled statement necklaces accessorize long, rounded brows, sitting against, sharp, carbon-winged eyes, and soft nude lips.

Chiffon draped shoulders and lace silhouettes, sweetheart necklines tucked into midi-skirts, where sex meets modesty. She oozes every color, and so, I themed shades of red, from the palest pantone pink to the boldest fuchsia. In skirts, scarves, lips, cheeks, nails, and embroidered details, dressed, and undressed, I channeled That Kind of Woman, Sophia.

Ciao, Ciao!

Mother Orchid | Spring at The Orchid Show

Behold the luxurious and mysterious romantic allure of the orchid. With its asexual regality, the orchid does not flirt, yet plays hard to get, making you lead with effort, giving special instructions for its maintenance that, if ignored, will surely abandon you. The orchid’s decorative, edible, and medicinal qualities, make it a flower that feeds all five senses. To nurture it requires commitment, and like the mate that elicits your best qualities, it teaches patience and perseverance.

Each Spring, the New York Botanical Garden celebrates this elegant flower with its annual Orchid Show. Thirty thousand species of orchids displayed and inspired by an ever-changing theme, is at perfect as it sounds. In a nod to this year’s Orchid show, and to celebrate the first week of Spring, I reminisce on last year’s ‘Chandelier’ event; daydreaming of being surrounded by thousands of species of floral bliss, in an explosion of orchids with varying personalities, each beautiful in their own complex way.

Walking through the exhibit ignites childhood memories of trips to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens, picnicking with my mom, and inciting sensory cognition of floral notes that smell and feel new, and hopeful, like the first days of Spring.

love and hope,

Facemaid

Helloooo…Your Face Called | Hydrate Winter Skin

The past weekend’s New Year festivities (btw, Happy New Year!), coupled with the fashionably late arrival of winter has my skin singing Adele, searching for hydration.  Mother Nature’s cool dry air aligned with the warm, dry indoor temperatures of blazing boilers, dehydrate the skin at rapid pace. Protect your pretty, hydrate.

I like to add a mixer, or two, to my everyday skincare cocktail. Adding hydrating mists, masks, and moisturizers, are essential to combat the stress of the current, much cooler climate.

Below, I’m sharing a few of my face’s favorite drink’s of water!

An industry cult favorite, and my all-time favorite moisturizer, Embrolisse. Made with plant extracts that hydrate, and a texture that cushions the skin like a down comforter, I keep this in my personal and professional skincare kit.

New to regime, Elizabeth Arden Hydrating Mask, leaves my skin feeling fresh, and soft. Infused with Chamomile and kiwi extract to soothe, and Shea butter to moisturize, this mask once a week seals the moisture deal!

As one of my favorite brands of skincare, Caudalie Lip Conditioner does exactly what it says, conditions, but, with superpower antioxidants to help with anti-aging. You know I love a two-fer.

A literal 'drink of water' for your skin! But Avene Spring Water is a fave for its ability to soothe redness (windburn anyone?), and balance the skin's ph. Mist throughout the day to keep skin plump and hydrated!

‘Touched Shine’ | Touche Éclat

Like a golden magic wand possessing the power to wipe away a 60- hour work week just in time for Friday night; the perfect fix for the five o’clock makeup meltdown, or to simply add the glow of a Cinderella- inspired twinkle in your eye, YSL Touche Éclat allows you to discreetly erase imperfections caused by lining, and life…

Terry de Gunzburg, of byTerry, is the mastermind behind Touche Éclat, created over 20 years ago and is one of the beauty industries most coveted products.  In spite of its worldwide cult fame amongst makeup artists and the faces they paint, there are still beauty enthusiasts who find the click of the golden tube a bit of a conundrum.

Touche Éclat is perfect product for the ‘I’m not a makeup person,’ to the full on ‘Paris is Burning’ beat. It is glow, a highlighter, can sometimes double down as a concealer, and simply described, Touche is the equivalent of a Chantelle Lace Chemise; it covers, but the skin still peeks through.

Touche Éclat Tricks:

•Less is more; one of the few times you will hear me say this!

•If you are purchasing for the first time, ask for help getting matched. YSL Beauté extended the shade range, so ovations for 12, yes 12, options!!!

•Blend out by tapping with your ring finger; or try using a blending brush for a super sheer effect.

•Below I posted a few of my favorite places for Touche Éclat touch-up tricks.

Hotel California, NYC

Through the thickness of a European accent, he professed, ‘I could listen to your voice all night…’ He then asked, if I would sing him a song.  I warned him of the potential tragedy likely to ensue.  Yet tickled, and a little flattered, I reluctantly obliged his request. ‘ So, what song should we sing?’ I asked.  He looked at me, and replied, “Hotel California…”

One iTunes download later, and a quick Google search for lyrics, we stumbled through the melody of a classic…and lived one of those awesomely random, unforgettable New York moments…

The memory of that night was reignited by the name of an über rich, super pigmented , high-shine gloss with the perfect punch of opaque.  Its sheer enough to complement a smoky eye, and strong enough to stand alone.  How fortuitous this Becca Ultimate Colour Gloss is aptly named Hotel California…Ahhhh, life is but a theme.

Face Champagne | Caudalíe Beauty Elixir

It is no secret I am obsessed with hydrating sprays, and today I am celebrating one of my favorite beauty brands, and an all- time favorite product: Caudalíe Beauty Elixir.

The champagne of hydrating sprays, Caudalíe Beauty Elixir proves that grapes are for more than just wine.  A mist of grapeseed extract, rose, orange blossom, rosemary, and balm mint team up to take you to your skin destination: Pretty.  The result: hydrated skin and tightened pores, and a refreshed and radiant complexion.

Clients get giddy when graced with the mist, and it is often the alpha and omega of my makeup applications. ‘What’s in this stuff?’ and ‘What does it do?’ are both common questions. I have listed a sort of Cliffnotes of Caudalíe Beauty Exlixir’s key ingredients…

Grapeseed Extract– Contains an antioxidant 20x the power of Vitamin E; and 50x the power of Vitamin C.

Rose– Tones to help tighten pores; is an anti-inflammatory to help reduce redness and swollen spots; and moisturizes to lock in moisture.

Rosemary–  Moisturizes skin and tightens pores.

Balm Mint– Contains Vitamin A, reducing oiliness, and regenerates skin tissue.

Orange Blossom– Hydrates

Get misted before and after makeup application, mid-day, or post-flight.

Cheers,

Un-Tangled {My First French Hair Cut}

After a week of traveling through Croatia in rainy mountain air and waterfalls seeping into my scalp, by the time I made it to Paris, it was time to get clean. I had a hair date with Sergio Chessari and his scissor- dancing hands at the Didact Hair Building. I wanted to spare my hair from unwarranted judgment; besides, she didn’t deserve to be judged for my neglect.

On the fly, I popped into a pharmacy and began surveying my options. I was familiar with Klorane’s infamous Dry Shampoo, so to me, they had major street cred. I opted for the Shampoo with Desert Date, (you had me at date btw.) It looked and smelled, richly sweet!  So I’m ready to clean, but since I’m at the border of unintentional dreadlocks, or, in this case, should I say one over-sized unintentional dreadlock; I needed something to aide in a smooth separation of my hair.  A firm believer hair products work best when used in brand tandem, I grabbed the Leave-In Detangling Spray with Oat Milk. For curly girls, leave-ins are essential! The result, dates and oat milk combined to make a delicious hair cocktail that left my hair perfectly clean, pillowy soft, and ready for Sergio…

TBT: Self-Dove

As a makeup artist, I have learned to appreciate that every woman, and man, has at minimum, one unmistakably beautiful feature.
The newest Dove ad campaign brilliantly explores how we perceive ourselves, and our own individual beauty; citing only 4% of women globally describes themselves as beautiful.  Dove commissioned a forensic sketch artist to draw a group of women based on their self-description of their own features.  Seeing it made me think of a word I learned recently, maître, meaning, loving-kindness towards oneself.

This campaign ignited within me a desire to explore and evaluate how I view my own appearance.  Would I describe myself with maître?  Or, Would I be as self-deprecating as the women in the video? How would my self- explained sketch differ, juxtaposed with a stranger’s perception of me?  As these questions danced in my brain, I realized, once I was completely honest with myself, that, I, many times, like the subjects in the commercial, have or have had the tendency to pick myself apart, in similar ways.

I found this campaign powerful, necessary, timeless., and, at the same time, refreshingly honest and vulnerable.   If you have a moment, and you have not seen it, take a peek, I’d love to know what you think.  I thought it was important to share…
